Maarten De Ceulaer was born in Belgium, and started his education in design at the Sint-Lukas Hogeschool in Brussels. Attracted by conceptual and narrative design, he continued his studies at the Design Academy Eindhoven. A strong passion for travelling inspired his graduation project “A Pile of Suitcases,” a series of functional designs (desk, dresser, coffee table) based entirely on suitcases. The series garnered international attention for the highly evocative, poetic and playful touch De Ceulaer invested in an everyday, common object.
De Ceulaer uses his work to tell stories, to stir emotions and to engage the imagination. His projects explore the use of materials through a variety of crafts and techniques; whereas some work is more traditionally functional, some engage the viewer on a more emotional level.
De Ceulaer was awarded Belgian Young Designer of the Year 2007, and his work has been featured in many international design magazines, publications and newspapers, and has been exhibited at galleries, museums, festivals and fairs worldwide.
